Gert Doekes is assistant professor and senior staff member of the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), University Utrecht, The Netherlands.
After an MSc in Biology (1980) and PhD in immunology and inflammation research (Activation of human complement by IgG immune complexes; University Leiden, 1984) he worked as post-doc and junior staff member in clinical immunology research in various University hospitals in NL (Leiden, Amsterdam and Utrecht – departments of Rheumatology, Ophthalmology and Dermatology).
In 1992 he became assistant professor in the department of Epidemiology and Public Health, division Environmental and Occupational Health of Wageningen University, starting in asthma/allergy research in population studies. The EOH department moved in 2000 from Wageningen to Utrecht University where it merged with the UU Toxicology Institute to the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS).
Besides spending much of his time on educational activities in the UU Biomedical Sciences BSc program, his main research focus is the development and application of basic immunological methods in large-scale epidemiological studies, including immunoassays for the measurement of occupational and environmental allergens, and other health-relevant biological agents like mold antigens and bacterial endotoxins.
